Gen: Adapt – Georgina’s story

Georgina's journey into retail wasn’t planned, but after taking a temporary role at M&S during her gap year, she found herself drawn to the high-energy environment. Now a Café Team Manager, Georgina shares how the M&S Retail Leaders School Leaver Programme has helped her discover her potential and build a rewarding career.

I originally went to a performing arts school and thought my future would be in drama, but retail found me during my gap year, and I haven’t looked back since. I took a temporary job at M&S Spalding when I moved back home during the pandemic, where I found that I really loved the high-energy nature of working in-store and interacting with customers every day. The store then sadly closed and I moved to the Kings Lynn store for a few months before I went back to drama school and transferred to M&S in Hitchin. There, my manager introduced me to the M&S Retail Leaders School Leaver Programme, and I knew it was the right choice for me.

I started the programme at Fosse Park in Leicester, and after 18 months, I was appointed as a Café Team Manager. I had no prior leadership experience, but the support from my managers, apprenticeship tutors, and the wider M&S team made the transition so much easier. Weekly check-ins and constant feedback helped me build confidence and develop the skills I needed to manage a team effectively. I never thought that a temporary role would lead to the career I’m so passionate about today.

What makes M&S special to me is the sense of connection I’ve always felt with the brand. It holds a lot of sentimental value and, for a modern business, it still values its rich history. This year I was appointed into my first Team Manager role, continuing my journey at Fosse Park Academy store. The most exciting aspect about my appointment was I would now be a part of the site going through Renewal, and seeing it transform into one of the largest stores in the Midlands. It was a proud moment to lead my team through the business’ largest Coffee Shop transformation, a new concept for the business. The variety in my role keeps things exciting every day - from ensuring we trade safely and legally to providing excellent customer service and problem-solving on my feet. I love the mix of tasks, the opportunity to drive change, and the pace of the business.

M&S is always evolving, and that’s what makes it exciting. You need to be adaptable and resilient because things can change quickly, and challenges are part of the job. Every day is a learning opportunity, whether it’s trying out new café concepts or leading a team through a busy period. My proudest moment so far was graduating from the programme and reflecting on everything I’ve achieved over the past two years. I’ve even had the opportunity to mentor new school leavers and graduates, which made me realise how far I’ve come, both personally and professionally.

My advice to anyone thinking about applying for the Retail Leaders School Leaver Programme? Be yourself, show your personality, and don’t be afraid to make connections. Colleagues often progress and move across the business, and so building relationships is key. This programme has prepared me for a professional career, helping me manage people, learn on the job, solve problems, and grow in confidence. M&S is a place where you’re constantly learning, but the support and work-life balance make it a great place to build your future.
