Mum, Manager, M&S: Danielle Bewers' Path to Success
Step into the world of Danielle Bewers, Team Manager at M&S, as she shares her remarkable journey from starting as a part-time colleague at the age of 16 to her proudest moment so far.
Danielle, thank you for taking the time to chat with us. Let's start by discussing what initially attracted you to apply for a job at Marks and Spencer?
I started at M&S when I was just 16 years old in 2011. My Mum was, and still is, a manager at M&S so you could say that retail runs in the family! I was drawn to the fast-paced atmosphere of retail and the opportunity to serve customers, so joining M&S felt like the natural choice for me.
Can you tell us about your journey so far at M&S, from when you first started to your current role?
I started out as a working in Foods at the weekends while I was still in college. Over time, I took on more responsibilities and gained experience in different areas of the store like the cafe. After a few years of working at M&S I had my first child. The business was incredibly supportive, offering flexible hours that allowed me to balance work and family life. As I gained more experience and confidence, I knew I wanted to pursue a managerial role. With the support of my Store Manager and mentors, I took the leap and applied for the ‘Stepping into Team Manager’ programme which provides the skills and training to progress into a line manager position. Becoming a Team Manager is definitely my proudest career moment so far!
What do you enjoy most about working for M&S, and what keeps you motivated in your role?
The challenge is what I enjoy the most. Every day presents new opportunities to learn and grow, and I'm constantly pushing myself to be the best Team Manager I can be. Knowing that I'm making a positive impact on my team and contributing to the success of my store keeps me motivated and driven.
How has M&S supported your career development and progression within the company?
M&S has been incredibly supportive every step of the way. My managers have always encouraged me to believe in myself and pursue my goals. They've provided me with the tools, resources, and guidance I needed to succeed. From flexible hours to development plans, M&S has truly invested in my growth and development.
What makes M&S a special place to work?
M&S is special because of its commitment to equal opportunities and inclusivity. Regardless of your background or circumstances, M&S values every single colleague and provides a supportive environment for growth and development. It's a place where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and thrive.
Lastly, what advice would you give to someone considering a career at M&S?
My advice would be to go for it! Whether you're starting as a part-time temp or pursuing a managerial role, M&S offers endless opportunities for growth and development. Believe in yourself, work hard, and don't be afraid to seize opportunities when they arise. With dedication and perseverance, anything is possible at M&S.
