Can you describe your role within Supply Chain & Logistics at M&S?

My career journey at M&S has spanned over 12 years, encompassing various roles within Supply Chain and Logistics. I've managed commercial KPIs, led operational design and change management, and delved into complex problem-solving and tech product management. I love to ensure that I can keep learning and each role I have had at M&S has challenged me in a different way.

Currently, as an Assistant Continuous Improvement Manager in the Warehouse Operations Team, I oversee change projects, conduct root cause investigations, and drive improvements to benefit the business and enhance customer service. In this role, I am lucky enough to work across various teams and with great people, both internally and externally, to deliver change projects into the distribution centres.

What inspired you to pursue a career in Supply Chain & Logistics?

My journey into this industry began with my Dad's influence, who worked at a courier company. Starting as an Admin Assistant at 17 in a local delivery office, I quickly found myself immersed in the operational team's environment. Despite being in a male-dominated setting, I thrived in the fast-paced atmosphere, shaping me into the person I am today, and I’ve never looked back.

Why do you think you were nominated for the Industry Champion Award at the Women in Transport awards?

I believe my nomination largely stems from my dedication to balancing my career with being a parent to three children. Passionate about my work, I consistently give my all. I’m not afraid to ask the tough questions and I always uphold M&S values.

Alongside the day job, I’m actively involved in Inclusion and Diversity initiatives to ensure that everyone can be their true selves at work. I’m also an active member of our SC&L I&D group and Women in Logistics group.

Putting this all together, my boss would say I am force to be reckoned with which is why I think I’ve been nominated. If I am driving change and delivering at work and at home then I am living a life I am very proud of.

You recently won the Ally Award at the inaugural M&S Penny Awards for International Women’s Day. Why were you nominated and how did you feel about winning?

Being nominated and winning the Ally Award was an unexpected honour. There are so many amazing women working at M&S that I felt like a bit of an imposter! I was recognised for my contributions to M&S’s Inclusion and Diversity efforts, including sharing my own personal experiences to drive change and reverse mentoring a senior leader, I felt both shocked and humbled.

It's incredibly gratifying to know that I've made a positive impact on my colleagues, advocating for those who may not feel empowered to speak up.

Can you share any challenges you've faced as a female professional in this field and how you've overcome them?

Working in a male-dominated environment, I've encountered challenges like sexism and pressure to conform to masculine norms, especially when I was more junior in my career. Overcoming these hurdles has required a balance of adaptability and authenticity. I've remained true to myself, embracing my passion and resilience to navigate through adversity.

What advice would you give to other women who are interested in pursuing a career in Supply Chain & Logistics?

Empathy, caring nature, and authenticity are invaluable assets in any industry, including Supply Chain & Logistics. Don't shy away from being yourself - your unique perspective and values can drive high performance and foster inclusivity. Embrace your strengths and bring them to the table, unapologetically.

What makes M&S a special place to work?

M&S have given me the platform to be myself and the opportunity to drive change. The business fosters a healthy and supportive work environment centred around customer values and colleague appreciation, making it a truly rewarding place to be.

Lastly, how do you feel about being recognised for your achievements in the Supply Chain & Logistics industry?

Being recognised for my achievements in such a diverse and impactful industry is both surprising and deeply gratifying. I'm proud to stand alongside the other inspirational women of M&S and contribute to positive change in the Supply Chain & Logistics sector.
