Continuous Improvement in action at Castle Donington

At M&S, Continuous Improvement (CI) is more than a methodology; it’s a mindset. Across our Logistics network, colleagues are encouraged to examine every process and challenge, always asking, “how can we make this better?”

At our Castle Donington distribution centre, that mindset is evident. Karl Nicolson, Continuous Improvement Lead and co-chair of the M&S Armed Forces Network, has helped create an environment where colleagues feel empowered to suggest improvements, experiment, and share what they learn.

Some of the most impactful changes have come from small, practical ideas. Repositioning a tool, clarifying a sign, or removing an unnecessary step can make a big difference. It often starts with someone asking, “What if we tried this?”

CI at Castle Donington is not just about celebrating success. It’s also about learning from failure. The team’s internal blog captures these lessons, sharing what worked, what didn’t, and how the team adapted.

As Karl explains:

“Continuous Improvement isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress. Sometimes we get things right first time, sometimes we don’t. Either way, we share what we’ve learned. That honesty builds trust and helps improvement spread.”

Recognition is also important. Celebrating contributions, whether in team huddles or through the CI Network, shows that every effort counts. Apprentices developing new test rigs, Engineers using 3D printing to reduce downtime, and Technicians logging data that prevents future failures - all are acknowledged and valued.

A key principle at Castle Donington is Yokoten, a Japanese concept meaning “horizontal sharing.” It ensures good ideas are shared across shifts, teams, and sites, rather than staying in one place. This approach is helping improvements spread across the wider Food, Home, and Beauty logistics network.

Recent initiatives include:

  • A drone inspection trial to remove the need for working at height, improving safety
  • Reliability Centred Maintenance studies that reduce downtime and boost performance
  • The launch of a Continuous Improvement Forum connecting Engineering, ICQA, and Operations to align priorities and share learning.

These efforts represent more than efficiency gains; they show what happens when colleagues feel ownership and responsibility for improving their work.

Karl sums it up:

“CI is about people. When colleagues feel empowered to speak up, experiment, and recognise each other’s efforts, improvement becomes part of how we work, not just something we do.”

The mindset at Castle Donington is spreading across the logistics network, resulting in smarter solutions, stronger teams, and a growing community committed to making continuous progress.

At M&S, Continuous Improvement isn’t a department or a project. It’s how we work.
