Everyone is welcome at M&S. No exceptions. It’s your background, abilities and differences that make you, uniquely you. And when you’re part of M&S, that individuality has the potential to make waves.
This section tells you all you need to know about the position and its responsibilities, outlining everything we hope to see in a successful candidate.
We’re looking for a dynamic, commercially savvy Senior Finance Manager to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of store performance at M&S. This is a high‑impact role at the centre of our Retail strategy, turning data into meaningful insight, driving divisional performance reviews, optimising store P&Ls, and influencing decisions across Food and Fashion, Home & Beauty.
You’ll partner closely with Store Directors and Business Operations to unlock new value, improve profitability, automate and modernise reporting, and elevate commercial themes into Retail Leadership forums. If you thrive on solving commercial challenges, love getting close to the business, and want to help shape how our stores deliver outstanding performance, we’d love to hear from you!
To stay close to customers, our support teams are in the office three days a week as we believe that skills are developed through collaboration, and that spending time together makes us more creative and connected.
Due to high interest, this role may close earlier than advertised. We recommend applying as soon as possible.
What you’ll do
Your key accountabilities will include:
Improve store profitability through actionable, data‑led insight, identifying trends, risks and cost drivers, and shaping commercial and operational decision‑making across Retail.
Partner cross‑functionally with Food and Fashion, Home & Beauty, leading performance deep dives and surfacing key themes for divisional and Retail Leadership reviews.
Elevate store reporting and P&L understanding, setting the vision for reporting improvements, driving monthly CMR enhancements, and supporting robust planning and performance targets.
Strengthen store capability and reputation management, spending time in stores, presenting at regional meetings, upskilling leaders on end‑to‑end profit, and supporting analysis across waste, loss and operational performance.
Lead people, innovation and continuous improvement, developing a high‑performing analyst, driving automation and digitisation of financial processes, and sharing best practice across the wider finance community.
Who you are
Your skills and experience will include:
Robust financial and technical expertise, including being a fully qualified accountant (CIMA/ACCA/ACA/CA), strong budgeting and forecasting skills, and confidence in financial planning and analysis.
Strong commercial business partnering experience (ideally Retail or FMCG), with excellent commercial acumen, a solid understanding of retail market drivers, and the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
High data fluency, including handling large datasets, data visualisation, advanced Excel capability (essential), and desirable experience with Power Query or SQL.
Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to create impact at all levels, lead with a proactive, solutions‑driven mindset, and develop high‑performing teams.
A strong grasp of finance processes and controls, including business case appraisal, governance, system understanding, and the agility to learn quickly and adapt to changing priorities.
What’s in it for you?
Working at M&S means being part of something bigger - helping to deliver quality, value and service to millions of customers every day. We’re inclusive, fast-moving and always evolving, with a strong sense of purpose and a focus on doing the right thing.
Here are just a few of the benefits that make working here even more rewarding:

We're at our best when we're close to customers, and for many of us at M&S, that means working in store every day.
To stay close to customers, our support teams are in the office three days a week as we believe that skills are developed through collaboration, and that spending time together makes us more creative and connected. It also means we can solve problems as soon as they arise, learn and grow as a team, build trust, and get closer to our colleagues.
Your voice and your ideas matter here. Our 8 colleague networks are places to find support, listen to each other and encourage debate. You can pitch ideas ‘Straight to Stuart’, our CEO, or get involved in our BIG (Business involvement Group).
You’ll spend 7 days each year helping in store and getting closer to our customers. We also organise Insight Days, so you can learn more about specific business units, like Foods.
Here’s what to expect at each stage of the application process. This can change depending on the role you’ve applied to. If you need any reasonable adjustments made at any stage, let us know and we can help.
Fill in our short application form and hit submit.
Depending on the role, you may be invited to take part in an online assessment. Should you be invited to an online assessment your Talent Acquisition Partner will be more than happy to support you with any questions.
We'll invite you to join us for an interview. This could be remote or in person. Here, we'll ask you some role based technical questions and examine the behaviours we're looking for.
After we’ve decided, we’ll be in touch. If you’ve been successful, we’ll officially invite you to join the team and let you know the next steps.
